Do You Fear God’s Love Will Run Out?

“The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end.” ~Lamentations 3:22

I’m one of those people who likes to stockpile things. Not everything—I don’t hoard—but I do like having extras on hand, especially staples like coffee, cream, and dark chocolate. Things got worse when we moved to Arkansas; now my backups have backups. I mean, who buys twelve pounds of cashews and cases of garbanzo beans and coconut milk? I do. I hate running out. And yes, in case you were wondering, we have far more toilet paper than we need.

I didn’t grow up in poverty. I never missed a meal. We lived comfortably. But love was another matter. There was never enough to go around. Love felt scarce—something that could run out at any moment. And often, it did.

This is not the case with God’s love.

“The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases.” Never ceases. Sit with that for a moment. God’s love does not stop, diminish, or expire. It cannot be used up, worn thin, or depleted. There is no danger of scarcity with Him. His love is not fragile or limited; it is constant and inexhaustible.

And not only is His love without end—it is vast. “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him” (Psalm 103:11). God’s love stretches beyond human measurement and comprehension. It is so expansive that we don’t simply receive it—we are meant to dwell in it.

Reflection

  1. What are the things you fear “running out of” most—practically or emotionally? What do those fears reveal about where you look for security?

  2. How has your past shaped the way you expect love to behave—with conditions, limits, or expiration dates?

  3. Lamentations 3 is written in the midst of suffering and loss. How does knowing the context deepen the meaning of the phrase “never ceases”?

  4. Where are you tempted to believe—functionally or emotionally—that God’s love might be exhausted by your weakness, sin, or circumstances?

  5. What would it look like today to live as though God’s love is not something to ration, but something to rest in?

Prayer

Lord, You know how easily we fear loss—of resources, of stability, of love. Thank you that your steadfast love never ceases and your mercies never come to an end. Help us to trust the abundance of your love, especially when life has taught us to expect scarcity. Grow us in our understanding of your love and teach us to dwell securely in its embrace. Amen.
